What makes a strong University of Vermont personal statement?

I’m working on my application to the University of Vermont and I want my personal statement to feel specific and genuine instead of generic. I’ve done pretty well academically, but I’m not sure what kind of stories or traits would make a strong impression in a college essay.

I’m mainly trying to understand what the personal statement should highlight so it feels like a good fit for UVM.

A strong University of Vermont personal statement should show curiosity, initiative, and a genuine sense of fit with UVM’s mix of academics, sustainability, and community engagement. The best essays usually feel grounded in one specific moment or experience, then connect that moment to how you think, work, and contribute. UVM is especially known for a strong environmental and civic-minded culture, so an essay that reflects intellectual curiosity, care for place, or commitment to helping others can land well if it is authentic. The key is not to name-drop the school, but to show qualities that would make you a good member of its community.

What stands out most is specificity. Instead of writing broadly about being hardworking or passionate, focus on a concrete story that reveals something distinctive about you, like how you solved a problem, pursued an interest outside class, or changed your perspective. If you can connect that story to a real part of UVM, such as interdisciplinary learning, research, service, outdoor life, or sustainability-related work, the essay will feel more tailored.

A strong essay also answers the unspoken question, “What will you bring to campus?” That could mean resilience, leadership, creative thinking, a habit of asking good questions, or a commitment to building community. If your story shows how you interact with people, ideas, or challenges in a thoughtful way, it will read as a good fit for UVM without sounding forced.
