What is the student experience like at Michigan State University as a public university?
I'm a high school senior trying to get a better sense of what day-to-day student life is like at Michigan State. Since it's such a large public university, I'm curious how that affects classes, campus culture, and overall support for students.
I'm trying to figure out whether the size and setting would feel overwhelming or still manageable for an undergrad.

Michigan State feels like a big public university in the best and most obvious ways: lots of school spirit, a very active campus, and plenty of options, but it can also feel busy and spread out. For many undergrads, the size is manageable because so much student life is centralized on the East Lansing campus, and there are strong systems for housing, advising, tutoring, and student organizations. The campus can feel lively and self-contained, which helps the school feel less overwhelming day to day than a large university might sound on paper.
In classes, the experience depends a lot on the course size. Intro classes can be large, especially in high-demand majors, but Michigan State also offers smaller seminars, discussion sections, and opportunities to connect with faculty once you move into your major. That usually means students need to be proactive, but they also have access to a lot of academic support if they use it.
The campus culture is very social and very traditional in the best sense of the word. Spartans tend to care a lot about sports, campus pride, and joining clubs, so it’s easy to find a community if you put yourself out there.
