What is a good way to approach Michigan State University supplemental essay prompts?

I’m a high school junior starting to work on college applications, and Michigan State is one of the schools I’m considering. I know some supplements are mostly about showing fit, but I’m not sure what they are really looking for in the response.

I want to make sure I understand the best way to approach these prompts before I start drafting.

A strong Michigan State supplement should be specific, student-centered, and clearly connected to something you would actually do on campus. If a prompt asks about fit, focus on a particular academic interest, campus resource, program, or experience that matches your goals. If it asks about a challenge or identity, use a concrete story that reveals how you think, not a broad summary of your background.

For Michigan State, it helps to write like someone who has done real homework. Mention details that matter to you, such as the size of the university, the collaborative campus culture, undergraduate research, living-learning communities, the Honors College, Spartan athletics and school spirit, or the broad range of majors and student organizations. The goal is to show that you are choosing MSU for specific reasons, not because it is a well-known school.

A good approach is to answer the prompt directly in the first sentence or two, then support that answer with one focused example from your life and one or two MSU-specific details. For example, if you’re interested in engineering, you might connect a project you worked on in high school to MSU’s research and design opportunities rather than writing generally about liking STEM. If you’re discussing leadership or community, show how you acted in one real moment and then explain how that would carry over to a Spartan environment.
