How should I approach the Tulane optional essay if I want it to actually help my application?

I’m applying to Tulane and I’m not sure how to think about the optional essay strategically. I know “optional” doesn’t always really mean optional, and I don’t want to submit something weak just to have more material in my application.

I’m trying to figure out what makes the optional essay worth doing and what kind of topic would make it useful instead of repetitive.

If you’re serious about Tulane, the optional essay is usually worth doing, as long as it adds something new and is well executed. It is most useful when it reveals either a strong reason Tulane fits you or a personal dimension that does not already come through in your main essay and activities list.

The best strategic approach is to treat it as a targeted value-add, not a second personal statement. For Tulane, strong optional essays often work in one of two ways: a specific why Tulane response tied to real academic, community, or campus opportunities, or a short personal essay that shows voice, curiosity, humor, perspective, or character in a way your application otherwise does not.

If you choose a why Tulane angle, be concrete. Mention programs, interdisciplinary opportunities, New Orleans connections, service-learning, research, or campus culture only if you can explain why those matter to you specifically. Naming random classes or traditions without linking them to your goals will feel thin.

If you choose a more personal topic, pick a narrow moment or habit that reveals something memorable about how you think. A small, vivid story is usually better than a broad life summary.

What would make it weak is repetition, generic praise of Tulane, or writing it like an obligation. If your draft sounds like it could be sent to ten other schools, it is not helping. If it gives the reader a fresh reason to picture you at Tulane, it probably is.
