How important are letters of recommendation for Tulane admissions?

I’m a rising senior putting together my college list, and Tulane is one of the schools I’m seriously considering. My grades and activities are solid, but I’m not sure how much weight Tulane really gives to teacher recommendations compared to the rest of the application.

I’m trying to understand whether strong letters can meaningfully help at a school like Tulane or if they mostly just confirm what’s already in the transcript.

Letters of recommendation matter at Tulane, but they are usually a supporting part of the application rather than one of the biggest drivers. A strong letter can absolutely strengthen your case, especially if it gives specific evidence of how you think, contribute in class, or handle challenge.

In practice, recommendations at Tulane are often most useful as confirmation plus detail. If your grades are already strong, a teacher letter that shows intellectual curiosity, leadership in discussion, or unusual initiative can make your academic profile feel more vivid. If there is something uneven in your record, a counselor or teacher letter can also provide context in a credible way.

What usually does not help much is a generic letter that says you were nice, hardworking, and respectful. The best Tulane recommendations are specific and classroom-based, especially from junior-year core academic teachers who can describe how you write, analyze, participate, or support peers. Those kinds of letters can meaningfully help because they show what kind of student and community member you would be on campus.
