What is Tulane campus culture and student life actually like for undergraduates?

I’m considering Tulane and I keep seeing a mix of things about it being very social, service-oriented, and influenced by New Orleans. I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what day-to-day student life feels like beyond the marketing.

I’d especially like to understand the overall campus vibe and what kinds of students tend to feel like they fit in there.

Tulane’s undergraduate culture is genuinely social, energetic, and shaped by New Orleans, but it is not just one scene. Day to day, students tend to describe a campus that is friendly, active, and fairly extroverted, with a lot happening on and off campus. The school’s location in Uptown New Orleans, its strong traditions around service, and a visible Greek life presence all noticeably shape student life.

The overall vibe leans outgoing and involved. Students often like having full schedules: classes, clubs, campus events, live music, restaurant outings, and community engagement are all part of the rhythm.

At the same time, the social culture is real. Greek life has historically been fairly visible, though you do not need to join to have a social life. There are plenty of students who find community through clubs, intramural sports, student government, arts groups, research, and the city itself. A lot of weekends involve some mix of campus events and New Orleans activities rather than students staying in one campus bubble.

New Orleans is probably the biggest factor in what makes Tulane feel different. Students who like a city with personality, music, festivals, food, and some unpredictability often love it. If you want a contained college-town environment, Tulane may feel less traditional because the city is part of the experience.
