How do you apply to transfer colleges as an undergraduate student?

I’m trying to understand the actual transfer application process from start to finish. I’m a high school senior looking ahead, and I keep seeing people talk about transferring after freshman or sophomore year, but I don’t really know what steps are involved.

I’m mostly trying to figure out what applying as a transfer usually includes so I can understand how different it is from applying as a first-year student.

Applying to transfer colleges as an undergraduate is similar to applying as a first-year student, but the focus shifts from your high school record to your college performance. Most transfer applications ask for your college transcript, a transfer essay or personal statement, your high school transcript, and often a college report from your current school. Many colleges also want course descriptions or syllabi later so they can decide which credits transfer.

At many colleges, you apply through the Common App transfer application or the Coalition application, though some schools use their own portal. You will usually submit your college transcript, final high school transcript, a personal statement explaining why you want to transfer and what you want academically, and one or more recommendations, often from college professors rather than high school teachers.

You may also need a mid-term report showing your current semester grades, especially if you are applying during your first year of college. Standardized tests are often less important for transfer applicants, and many colleges do not require them, especially if you have completed enough college credits. Activities can still matter, but colleges care a lot about how you used your time in college and whether you performed well in your classes.

Once admitted, the final step is the credit evaluation. This is a big difference from first-year admissions because not every class you took will necessarily count toward your new degree program.
