Which UC schools are strongest for a biology major?
I’m a high school junior starting to build my college list, and I know I want to study biology, possibly on a pre-med track. I keep hearing different opinions about the UC campuses, but I’m not sure which ones are actually considered strongest for biology overall.
I’m mainly trying to understand how the UCs compare in terms of biology academics and research reputation, not just general prestige.

For biology overall, the strongest UC campuses are usually UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Davis. Berkeley and UCLA have the broadest national reputation, UC San Diego is especially strong in biological sciences and biomedical research, and UC Davis stands out for life sciences depth, especially genetics, ecology, animal biology, and related fields.
UC Berkeley is excellent for molecular and cell biology, integrative biology, genetics, and bioengineering-adjacent work. Its biology programs are academically intense and very research-oriented, with outstanding faculty and lab access, though the environment can feel large and competitive.
UCLA is one of the best all-around choices if you want strong biology plus a pre-med friendly ecosystem. It has top-tier departments in areas like microbiology, human biology and society, neuroscience-related fields, and biochemistry.
UC San Diego is often underrated by students who focus only on overall name recognition, but for biology it is one of the very best in the UC system. The Division of Biological Sciences is a major strength.
UC Davis is particularly strong if you are interested in ecology, evolution, animal biology, agriculture-related biosciences, plant sciences, or genetics. It also has excellent research volume and a highly respected medical and veterinary ecosystem, which gives biology students a lot of specialized opportunities.
After those four, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine are also very solid for biology. UCSB is strong in marine biology, ecology, and biochemistry, while UCI has growing strength in biological sciences.
