When should a high school student apply for community college summer classes?

I'm a high school junior thinking about taking a community college class next summer to get ahead and see what college coursework is like.

I'm trying to figure out how early I should start the application process so I have enough time for placement, registration, and any school approval I might need.

At many community colleges, summer registration opens sometime in spring, and high school students often have extra steps like dual enrollment forms, parental consent, placement, or counselor approval. If you wait until May or June, the biggest risk is not missing the application itself, but finding that the class you want is full or that you are still waiting on approvals.

Popular summer classes, especially introductory English, math, psychology, and online courses, can fill quickly.

Also check whether your high school requires preapproval for credit, transportation documentation, or limits on which courses you can take. Some schools will let you take the class for enrichment even if they do not award high school credit, while others want a signed form before you enroll.

I would also verify three things directly with the community college: whether high school students can enroll in summer, whether placement testing is still required for your intended course, and the exact registration date for visiting or dual enrollment students.
