How should I approach the William & Mary supplemental essay prompts if I want my responses to feel specific and not generic?

I'm applying to William & Mary and I'm a little stuck on how to handle school-specific supplemental essays without sounding like I'm just saying what I think they want to hear.

I want to understand what these prompts are usually trying to reveal about an applicant so I can write something honest that still fits the school.

Approach William & Mary’s supplements by treating them as a test of fit through specifics, not flattery. Your responses will feel less generic if you connect one real trait or experience of yours to one concrete William & Mary resource, culture point, or value, instead of praising the school in broad terms.

For a “why us” style prompt, do not write about beautiful campus, strong academics, or great community. That means naming particular departments, research centers, classes, student organizations, or traditions, and then explaining why they matter to you personally. The key is the second half: not just “I like the Sharp Community Scholars Program,” but “because I’ve already been doing X and want a campus where civic work is part of daily student life.”

If the prompt is short or more playful, lean into precision and voice. A small, vivid detail can do more than a polished abstract statement. For example, if you are writing about community, describe the kind of conversation, project, or campus role you see yourself taking on, rather than saying you want to be part of a diverse and collaborative environment.

In terms of what the prompts are usually trying to reveal, they often point toward a few things: how you think, what energizes you, whether you contribute to communities in a genuine way, and whether your interest in William & Mary is informed. They are usually not asking for a second personal statement. Pick one angle per essay, preferably something that is not already fully covered in your main Common App essay.
