What are the best majors at Duke for pre-med students?

At Duke, there is no single “best” pre-med major, but the most practical choices are Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, and sometimes Public Policy if you plan carefully. Duke medical school prerequisites can fit into many majors, and med schools do not require a science major. The best major is usually the one you can do well in while still completing core courses like general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, math, and often biochemistry.

Biology is the most straightforward option. It overlaps heavily with pre-med requirements, offers lots of relevant upper-level electives, and makes it easier to build a science-heavy academic plan without too much extra scheduling stress.

Neuroscience also fits pre-med very well, especially if you are interested in the brain, behavior, or research. It can be a bit more demanding than Biology because of the major requirements and the level of quantitative and lab-based coursework, but it is still a very common and workable pre-med choice at Duke.

Psychology can be a strong option too, especially if you are interested in mental health, cognition, or patient behavior. It usually gives you more flexibility than Biology or Neuroscience, but you would need to add the full pre-med science sequence separately. That can be a good tradeoff if Psychology is a better fit for your strengths and helps you keep your GPA strong.

Public Policy is possible, but it is less naturally aligned with pre-med requirements. You would likely have to do more careful semester planning to fit in all the sciences, especially labs. Still, it can be a smart choice if you are genuinely interested in health policy, healthcare systems, or public service, because it can help you build a distinctive academic story.
