What academic programs is Duke University best known for?
I’m starting to build my college list and Duke keeps coming up, but I only know the general reputation and not what it actually offers academically.
I’m trying to get a clear overview of the main programs and areas of study Duke is especially known for so I can figure out whether it matches my interests.

Duke is especially known for a few standout academic areas rather than just one signature major.
In the sciences, biomedical engineering is one of its strongest and most recognized programs. Duke also has a very strong pre-med culture, along with excellent biology, neuroscience, chemistry, and public health-related study.
Economics is another major strength, and it is one of the most popular majors at Duke. Political science, public policy, and international comparative studies are also well regarded, especially for students interested in law, government, policy, or global affairs.
If you are interested in engineering more broadly, Pratt School of Engineering is highly respected, with strong programs in biomedical, mechanical, electrical and computer, and civil/environmental engineering. Computer science has also grown a lot in popularity and reputation.
Duke is also well known for interdisciplinary study. Programs like global health, environmental science and policy, data science-related work, and science-and-society fields tend to be strong because the university encourages cross-school collaboration.
On the humanities side, Duke has a strong reputation in history, English, cultural studies, and philosophy, though it is probably most nationally recognized for STEM, economics, policy, and pre-professional pathways.
