What makes a strong Duke supplemental essay?
I’m starting my college essays and Duke is one of my top choices. I know the supplemental essay is supposed to show fit with the school, but I’m not sure what admissions officers usually want to see beyond that.
I’m trying to understand what separates a strong Duke supplement from a generic one so I can avoid writing something that could work for any college.

A strong Duke supplemental essay feels specific enough that it could not be pasted into another school’s application. The best ones connect your interests, values, and way of engaging with people to real parts of Duke’s community, not just its reputation, or pretty campus.
What usually makes the difference is the quality of the connection. Instead of saying Duke has great academics and school spirit, point to particular programs, classes, research centers, traditions, student groups, or interdisciplinary opportunities, then explain why those matter to you personally. The key is the “why you and why Duke” link, not just a list of resources.
Admissions readers also want to see how you would participate. Duke is known for intellectual energy, collaboration, and a strong campus culture, so a strong essay shows what you would contribute, not only what you hope to receive. That could mean how you would bring a perspective to classroom discussion, build community in a club, or combine interests in a way that fits Duke’s culture.
The essay is stronger when it is grounded in a clear personal angle. If you care about public policy, don’t just mention Sanford. Show the experience that made policy feel urgent to you, then connect that to what you want to do at Duke. If you love biomedical research, don’t stop at naming labs. Explain the question you are drawn to and how Duke would help you explore it.
Generic essays usually do three weak things: they praise Duke in broad terms, list opportunities without reflection, or describe the student rather than the match. Strong essays are concrete, selective, and forward-looking.
