What should I focus on in the Cornell Engineering supplemental essay?

I’m applying to engineering and I’m having trouble figuring out what this essay is really supposed to do beyond listing my interests. I want to make sure I’m using the space in a way that actually helps my application.

I’ve done a few engineering-related activities in high school, but I’m not sure how much to emphasize past experience versus why Cornell Engineering specifically fits what I want to study.

For Cornell Engineering, the essay should do more than prove you like engineering. Its real job is to show the match between how you think as an engineer, what you want to explore, and why Cornell Engineering is the right place for that exploration.

A strong structure is usually: what problem or area of engineering genuinely pulls you in, how you’ve engaged with that interest so far, and why Cornell’s specific academic environment fits your next step. The key is balance. Do not spend most of the essay just listing robotics, coding, research, or classes you have done.

Your past experience matters only insofar as it reveals something about your curiosity, problem-solving style, or goals. Pick one or two concrete moments instead of summarizing everything. For example, a design failure, a small breakthrough, or a question that kept growing can say much more than a resume-style recap.

Then spend meaningful space on Cornell-specific fit. Name programs, labs, project teams, courses, or aspects of the engineering culture that connect directly to your interests.

Try to avoid vague lines like “Cornell has great resources” or “I’ve always loved math and science.” Be specific about what you want to work on and why Cornell is the place where that interest can deepen. If you mention a major, explain what draws you to it in a thoughtful way.
