What is the student vibe like at Colgate University?

I’m trying to figure out whether Colgate would feel like a good fit beyond just academics. I go to a pretty social high school now, but I’m not looking for a super intense or competitive atmosphere.

I’m mainly wondering how students there come across day to day and what the overall campus culture feels like.

Colgate’s student vibe is usually described as social, polished, outdoorsy, and pretty involved. Day to day, students tend to be friendly and outgoing rather than academically cutthroat, but it is still a high-achieving student body, so people take classes seriously.

The campus culture leans residential and community-oriented because Colgate is in a small town and a lot of student life happens on campus. That means weekends can feel active and centered around campus events, clubs, athletics, and social gatherings rather than students constantly leaving for a city.

Socially, Colgate has a noticeable party scene, and that is part of campus life for some students, especially on weekends. At the same time, not everyone is in that scene all the time, and many students balance it with clubs, outdoor activities, performances, volunteer work, or just smaller friend-group hangouts.

A word that comes up a lot with Colgate is preppy. That does not mean everyone fits one mold, but the school can have a somewhat traditional, affluent, Northeast vibe in parts of the student body. For some students that feels energetic and comfortable, while for others it can feel a little homogeneous, so that is worth paying attention to when you visit or talk to current students.
