What is Carnegie Mellon known for academically?
I’m starting to build my college list and CMU keeps coming up, but I mostly hear people mention it without much detail beyond it being really strong academically.
I’m trying to understand what Carnegie Mellon is actually best known for in terms of majors and academic strengths so I can tell if it matches the kinds of programs I’m interested in.

Carnegie Mellon is best known academically for computer science, engineering, and the arts. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most respected in the country, and CMU has a particularly strong reputation in artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and software-related fields.
Its engineering programs are also a major draw, especially electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and biomedical engineering.
Beyond STEM, CMU is also very well known for drama, musical theater, design, architecture, and fine arts through the College of Fine Arts. Its business school, Tepper, is respected too, especially for business analytics, economics, and programs that connect business with technology and data.
Another thing CMU is known for is interdisciplinary academics. Students often combine areas like computer science with art, music, design, business, or cognitive science. That makes it especially appealing if your interests cross traditional major boundaries.
If you are looking at majors such as CS, engineering, robotics, design, architecture, drama, or quantitative business, CMU is a particularly strong fit.
