How hard is it to get into Carnegie Mellon University?
I am a high school junior and CMU is one of the schools I keep looking at, especially because I have heard it is really competitive. I am trying to get a realistic sense of how hard it is to get in overall, not just based on rumors.
I know some colleges are much harder depending on the school or major, so I am confused about what people usually mean when they say CMU is hard to get into.

Carnegie Mellon is very hard to get into overall, and for some programs it is extremely selective.
What makes CMU a little confusing is that selectivity varies a lot by college and intended major. The School of Computer Science is one of the hardest undergraduate programs in the country to enter, and programs in engineering, design, drama, and business can also be much more competitive than the university-wide rate suggests.
So when people say “CMU is hard to get into,” they usually mean two things. First, the university as a whole is tough. Second, some specific schools within CMU are significantly harder than others, so your odds depend a lot on what you apply for.
For a realistic benchmark, competitive applicants usually have very strong grades in a rigorous course load, especially in math and science if they are applying to technical programs.
CMU also tends to care about whether your interests line up clearly with the school you are applying to. A student applying to computer science, for example, should show deep and sustained interest in that area rather than just being generally high-achieving.
If you want the most accurate sense of difficulty, do not look only at the overall acceptance rate. Look at the specific CMU college you would apply to, your intended major, and how your academic profile compares to students admitted there.
