How strong is Brandeis University for pre-med students?
I’m a high school junior trying to build my college list, and I’m interested in schools where I could major in something like biology or neuroscience while staying on the pre-med track.
Brandeis seems appealing academically, but I’m having trouble figuring out how good it actually is for pre-med in terms of advising, research access, and overall support for students preparing for medical school.

Brandeis is a solid option for pre-med, especially if you want a strong science environment without being at a huge university. Biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience are all well regarded there, and the school has a strong reputation in the life sciences.
One of Brandeis’s biggest advantages is access to research. It is a research university, but still relatively small, which can make it easier to connect with faculty and find lab opportunities earlier than at some larger schools. That matters for pre-med students because research, mentoring, and strong recommendation letters can all grow out of those relationships.
For advising, Brandeis does offer pre-health advising and committee support for students applying to medical school. The key question is not just whether advising exists, but how proactive you are about using it. At a place like Brandeis, students who seek out advisors, office hours, and hospital or clinical opportunities tend to do well.
Location also helps. Being near Boston gives you access to a major healthcare and biotech hub, which can open doors for volunteering, shadowing, internships, and research.
The main thing to keep in mind is that Brandeis is academically demanding. That can be good preparation for med school, but you need to be realistic about GPA management, especially in weed-out science classes. If you visit or talk to current students, ask how easy it is to get clinical experience during the semester, how responsive pre-health advising is, and how many students feel supported through the med school application process.
