How much does Bowdoin's waitlist acceptance rate actually matter when deciding whether to stay on the waitlist?

I was waitlisted at Bowdoin and I keep seeing people talk about the waitlist acceptance rate, but I am not sure how useful that number really is for making a decision. I am trying to figure out whether it tells me anything meaningful about my chances or if it is too unpredictable to rely on.

Bowdoin’s waitlist acceptance rate matters a little, but not enough to be the main factor in your decision.

That number is usually very volatile from year to year. So the published rate tells you more about past enrollment management than about your personal odds this year.

The more useful question is practical: if Bowdoin called, would you still want to go and be ready to switch from your current plan? If yes, it usually makes sense to remain on the waitlist.

You should still commit to another college by the enrollment deadline and feel good about that choice. Think of Bowdoin’s waitlist as an option you keep open, not a plan you count on.

If Bowdoin allows it, a concise letter of continued interest can help more than obsessing over the acceptance rate. Keep it specific: confirm Bowdoin remains a top choice, share a few meaningful updates, and connect those updates to why Bowdoin is still a strong fit.
