What is Boston University campus culture like for undergraduates?

Boston University tends to feel energetic, urban, and fairly independent. Because the campus stretches along Commonwealth Avenue in the middle of Boston, student life is less of a traditional enclosed-campus experience and more of a city-based one. A lot of students like that freedom, but it can also make BU feel a bit less close-knit than smaller residential colleges.

Academically, the culture is generally serious and motivated, but not usually described as cutthroat across the university as a whole. Students are often busy, career-oriented, and involved in internships, research, or clubs, so there is definitely ambition. At the same time, many undergrads say collaboration depends a lot on the major. Some programs feel more team-oriented and supportive, while others can feel more intense simply because students are high-achieving.

Socially, BU is active but not centered around one single scene. There are plenty of clubs, performances, student organizations, cultural groups, and city activities, so students usually find their people through shared interests rather than through a very unified campus-wide social culture. It is not a place where everyone seems to know everyone.

If you want a strong sense of school spirit and a classic secluded campus feel, BU may feel more diffuse. If you like being around driven students, having access to Boston, and building your own routine and community, BU can be a really good fit.
