What should I focus on in a Boston College personal statement to make it feel like a strong fit?
I'm applying to Boston College and I'm having trouble figuring out how to write a personal statement that feels specific to the school without sounding forced. I want to come across as genuine, but I also want it to be clear why BC appeals to me.
I'm a high school senior and I keep second-guessing whether I should focus more on my personal story or on values and experiences that connect with Boston College.

For Boston College, the strongest approach is usually to keep the personal statement centered on you, then let the fit with BC emerge through the values, habits, and perspective you reveal. If your main Common App essay starts sounding like a "Why BC" essay, it can feel forced. BC wants to understand who you are first.
A good target is to highlight qualities that naturally align with Boston College’s culture: intellectual curiosity, reflection, service, community, empathy, moral seriousness, and a willingness to engage ideas bigger than yourself. The Jesuit influence matters, but you do not need to write about religion unless it is genuinely important to your life. What matters more is showing that you care about learning with purpose and contributing to a community.
So instead of saying, "BC appeals to me because it values service and leadership," write a story that shows how you actually live those things. Focus on a specific moment or pattern in your life where you asked thoughtful questions, took responsibility for others, bridged different groups, or found meaning in helping a community. The more concrete and personal, the better.
What tends to work well for BC is an essay that feels thoughtful rather than performative. Reflection is important. Do not just describe what happened. Spend real time on why the experience changed your thinking, what it revealed about your values, or how it shaped the way you engage with other people.
If you want BC-specific connection, save the direct school references for a supplemental essay if they have one, or keep them very light in the personal statement. For example, an essay about mentoring younger students, questioning ethical tradeoffs in a family business, or finding purpose in a campus ministry or neighborhood program can all suggest fit with BC without naming the school repeatedly.
