How good is Barnard College for pre-med students?

I’m a high school junior trying to build my college list, and I’m interested in Barnard because I like the idea of a small women’s college with access to Columbia.

I’m planning to be on the pre-med track, so I’m trying to figure out whether Barnard is actually a strong place for pre-med students in terms of academics, advising, and getting the opportunities med schools look for.

Barnard can be a very strong place for pre-med, especially if you want a smaller liberal arts college environment but still want access to a major research university. One of its biggest advantages is that Barnard students can take Columbia classes and use Columbia resources, so you get a lot of the academic and research opportunities people associate with a larger institution.

Academically, Barnard is rigorous, and that matters for pre-med because you need strong preparation in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and often biochemistry or statistics. The science courses are respected, but the workload is real, so it is best for students who are ready for a challenging environment rather than looking for an easier GPA path.

In terms of med school preparation, Barnard’s New York City location is a major plus. You are near major hospitals, clinics, labs, and public health organizations, which can make it easier to find clinical exposure, research, shadowing, and service opportunities. Those are exactly the kinds of experiences med schools want to see.

The main tradeoff is that pre-med at Barnard is not easy. Intro science classes can be demanding, and you will be surrounded by very strong students. If you like collaboration, can seek help early, and want both close advising and big-university access, Barnard is absolutely worth serious consideration for pre-med.
