Can you apply to college while taking a gap year?

I’m a high school junior and I’ve been thinking about taking a gap year after graduation, but I’m confused about how that works with applications.

I want to know if students usually apply during senior year and then defer, or if it makes more sense to apply during the gap year itself.

Yes, you can do it either way.

One common path is to apply during senior year, get admitted, and then request a deferral for a gap year. If the college approves it, you keep your spot and enroll the following year.

The other path is to wait and apply during your gap year. That can make sense if you want more time to strengthen your application, improve test scores, clarify your college list, or use your gap year experiences in your essays.

If you apply during your gap year, you will usually apply as a first-year student, not a transfer, as long as you have not enrolled full-time in college after high school.
