Which state is better for starting an environmental science career: Florida or Arizona?

Arizona fits students drawn to desert ecosystems, drought and water management, public-land conservation, renewable energy, wildfire, mining impacts, and environmental justice in the Southwest. Its arid environment makes water policy and watershed science central career areas, while its large landscapes and proximity to federal land-management work can benefit students interested in field ecology, conservation science, and resource management. Arizona can be especially compelling for someone who wants to work with desert species, rangelands, river systems, tribal nations, or solar-energy development.

For the broadest range of entry-level opportunities in coastal sustainability, environmental planning, and conservation, Florida has a slight edge. For a career centered on water scarcity, arid-land ecology, public lands, or clean-energy development, Arizona may offer the more coherent starting environment. In either state, the college’s access to internships, research sites, and relationships with agencies matters more than the state label alone.
