Is Rice or Notre Dame better for student support?

I’m a high school junior comparing Rice and Notre Dame, and I care a lot about how supported students feel after enrolling. I’m especially interested in the overall availability and quality of academic advising, peer support, and help when students are struggling.

Notre Dame is likely the stronger choice for a student who wants highly structured, visible support built into daily campus life. Its residential hall system gives students a stable community with resident assistants, rectors, and peer leadership, while first-year students also have dedicated academic advising resources. Rice offers an exceptionally close-knit experience through its residential colleges, but its support can feel more self-directed and relationship-based rather than centrally structured.

At Notre Dame, the residence hall is a major support network, not simply housing. Students remain connected to their hall communities, and hall staff can help them navigate academic, personal, and campus-life concerns. The university also has first-year advising, faculty and departmental advising as students progress, tutoring and learning support, and accessible counseling and wellness services.

Many students find that the smaller undergraduate population and college culture make it easy to know classmates and seek informal help quickly. Rice also provides academic advising, student success resources, tutoring, and counseling, but students often need to take more initiative in finding the right office or mentor.
