What are the best colleges for biology majors on the pre-med track?

I’m a high school junior and I know I want to study biology and go to med school later. I’m trying to build my college list, but I’m not sure what actually makes a college good for pre-med beyond just having a strong biology department.

I’m looking for how students usually judge which colleges are best for biology pre-med.

For biology on the pre-med track, the “best” colleges are usually not just the ones with the most famous biology departments. Students typically judge pre-med strength by a few practical things: how strong the advising is, how easy it is to get clinical experience, whether there are solid research options for undergrads, how supportive the grading culture is, and how successful students are at getting into medical school.

A good pre-med college usually offers easy access to hospitals, clinics, volunteering, shadowing, and labs. Strong committee advising or a dedicated health professions office matters a lot because pre-med requirements, timelines, and application strategy can get complicated. It also helps if undergraduates can actually join research early instead of competing mostly with grad students.

When building your list, I’d look up these specifics for each college: pre-health advising structure, undergraduate research access, nearby hospital partnerships, average class sizes in intro science courses, weed-out reputation, and actual med school placement information if the school publishes it. If a college has great biology but weak advising or limited access to hands-on experiences, it may not be the best pre-med fit.
