Its Keck School of Medicine, Keck Hospital of USC, and affiliated Los Angeles County clinical settings can make it easier to encounter physicians, research groups, and service opportunities, particularly for a proactive undergraduate. USC’s pre-health advising and alumni network can also feel more individualized, although students still need to build their own clinical hours, research record, and strong GPA.

UC Irvine can be an excellent fit for a self-directed student who wants a major public research university with particularly strong offerings in biological sciences, public health, nursing-related fields, and population-health research.
