Is Boston University or the University of Chicago harder to get into?

The University of Chicago is materially harder to get into than Boston University for most applicants. UChicago draws an unusually self-selecting pool of students with exceptional academic records, deep intellectual engagement, and applications tailored closely to its distinctive academic culture. Its supplemental essays also play a meaningful role because the school looks for originality, curiosity, and comfort with open-ended ideas, not just strong grades.

Boston University is also highly selective and should not be treated as a safety for strong applicants. It receives many applications from students seeking a large, urban research university with substantial professional options across fields such as business, communications, engineering, health, and the arts.

For college-list planning, an applicant who is competitive at BU is not automatically competitive at UChicago. A student with excellent academics and a clear interest in a particular BU program may have a realistic shot at BU, while UChicago typically requires that same academic strength plus a more distinctive intellectual and writing-based presentation.
