How should I compare UW–Madison and Rutgers for computer science?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Rutgers for computer science. I’m mainly trying to understand which program would be a better overall fit for someone interested in strong academics, internships, and software engineering careers.

For academics, compare the actual CS course sequences, availability of upper-level classes that interest you, research areas, and advising structure rather than assuming one name carries the outcome. For software engineering, internships, projects, interview preparation, and initiative will matter substantially at either school.

Cost should be a major deciding factor. A meaningful in-state tuition advantage or lower debt at either institution can outweigh modest differences in perceived prestige, especially in a field where graduates from both schools can compete for strong engineering roles.
