Is Vanderbilt or Columbia harder to get into?

Columbia is typically viewed as slightly harder to enter overall, although Vanderbilt is also an ultra-selective reach for virtually every applicant. The distinction is not meaningful enough to treat Vanderbilt as a “safer” alternative: a student competitive at Columbia should approach Vanderbilt with the same level of care, and a student denied by Columbia could still be admitted to Vanderbilt, or the reverse.

Columbia may be the tougher target for students whose main appeal is conventional academic strength, because it attracts a deep pool of high-achieving applicants from around the world. Its Core Curriculum also means applicants should show genuine interest in broad, discussion-based liberal-arts study rather than presenting Columbia as only a New York internship destination.

Vanderbilt can be especially compelling for students who want a highly residential campus, interdisciplinary flexibility, collaborative student culture, and access to Nashville. Its application still needs a clear reason Vanderbilt’s academic and campus environment fits the student; strong numbers alone will not distinguish an applicant.

Early Decision can change the odds at either school, but only for applicants who would genuinely enroll if admitted and can do so financially. For Regular Decision, Columbia carries a modestly higher overall perception of difficulty, while both belong in the highest-reach category.
