Johns Hopkins vs. Brandeis: Which Has a Stronger Jewish Student Community?

For a student who wants Jewish life to feel highly visible in the campus calendar, dining, friendships, and everyday conversation, Brandeis is likely the more natural fit. Brandeis was founded by the American Jewish community, remains nonsectarian, and has a substantial Jewish student presence alongside students of many faiths and backgrounds. Shabbat meals, holiday programming, kosher food, Jewish studies, and student organizations tend to be integrated into the rhythm of campus rather than operating as a smaller set of events.

Brandeis may be especially appealing if you want easy access to a wide range of Jewish observance and identity: religious services, cultural programming, Israel-related groups, social communities, and peers for whom Jewish life is an ordinary part of campus life. Its Chaplaincy and Jewish communal infrastructure support multiple denominations and approaches to practice, including students who are culturally Jewish, traditionally observant, or still exploring.

Johns Hopkins has an active Jewish community, with Jewish student organizations, Hillel programming, Shabbat and holiday opportunities, and a Chabad presence serving students. A Jewish student can absolutely build a meaningful Jewish life there, particularly by participating consistently and taking initiative.
