Tulane can still produce excellent applicants, particularly those drawn to public health and community medicine in New Orleans.

Duke’s research environment is the clearest distinction. Undergraduates can pursue work with faculty across Duke’s School of Medicine, Duke Health, and basic-science departments, including clinical, translational, and population-health projects. Research is not required for every medical school applicant, but sustained work that leads to real responsibility, a strong faculty relationship, or a presentation is often easier to find at a university with Duke’s scale of medical research.

Duke also has established health-professions advising and a large peer community pursuing medicine, which can make course planning, recommendation preparation, and application timing more navigable. Neither school removes the need to earn a strong GPA, prepare well for the MCAT, and build sustained clinical service.

Cost deserves serious weight because medical school is expensive. A substantially lower Tulane net price could outweigh Duke’s institutional edge, since graduating with less debt gives you more flexibility during medical school and residency.
