Which offers more undergraduate academic freedom: WashU or Brown?

Brown offers more undergraduate academic freedom. Its Open Curriculum has no university-wide core curriculum or general-education distribution requirement, so students can select courses across fields from their first semester while working toward a concentration. Brown students still must meet the requirements of their chosen concentration and complete the degree’s overall course and credit requirements, but they have unusually broad control over how they build the rest of their program.

That structure makes changing direction relatively straightforward. A student can explore computer science, anthropology, studio art, and public policy before settling on a concentration, without worrying that a large common set of required courses will crowd out exploration. Brown also permits students to pursue multiple concentrations or design an independent concentration when an existing department does not match a coherent academic plan.

WashU is flexible, particularly within the College of Arts  Sciences, and students can add majors, minors, and second areas of study. However, academic freedom depends more heavily on the school or program in which a student enrolls. Arts  Sciences has distribution and skills requirements, while programs such as engineering, business, and architecture have more prescribed foundational coursework. Moving between WashU schools is possible, but it can involve school-specific policies and may be harder to do late because required sequences differ.

For a student whose priority is maximum room to sample subjects and postpone firm academic commitments, Brown’s curriculum is the more permissive framework. WashU provides substantial choice, but Brown gives that choice more consistently across the undergraduate experience.
