How does the campus experience differ between Emory and McGill?

Emory offers the more traditional, self-contained residential campus experience, while McGill feels more urban, international, and independent because it is woven into downtown Montreal. At Emory, students spend much of their time on the Druid Hills campus, where residence halls, dining, libraries, student organizations, and green spaces are concentrated together. McGill’s downtown campus sits beside major city neighborhoods, so a student’s routine can move quickly from class to apartments, cafés, museums, parks, and Montreal nightlife.

Emory’s social life tends to be more campus-centered, especially in the first two years, when undergraduates commonly build friendships through residence halls, student groups, Greek life, school traditions, and events organized on or near campus. The atmosphere is often described as collaborative but pre-professional, with many students involved in health, business, research, or service-oriented paths. Atlanta is accessible, but it is more of a destination students travel into than the setting of every ordinary day.

At McGill, student interaction can feel less centralized because many students live off campus after their first year and create communities through programs, clubs, roommates, and the city itself. The student body is notably international, and Montreal’s bilingual French-English environment gives daily life a different cultural texture even though McGill’s instruction is primarily in English. Social life can be lively and varied, but it often requires more initiative to find a consistent circle and establish routines beyond class.

Weather also changes the rhythm. Emory’s mild climate makes the campus feel active outdoors for much of the year, whereas Montreal’s long, cold winter pushes more socializing indoors and makes proximity to campus, transit, and friends matter more.
