Which is better for physician assistant preparation: UC San Diego or Duke?

For physician assistant preparation, Duke is the more advantageous choice if its cost is manageable. Its smaller undergraduate setting, dedicated prehealth advising, and direct connection to the Duke University Health System can make it easier to build relationships with faculty, find clinical opportunities, and organize a PA-school timeline.

The clearest Duke advantage is access to a major academic medical center closely integrated with campus. That can support shadowing, volunteering, clinical employment, and mentorship, all of which are useful when applying to PA programs. Duke’s advising infrastructure can also help with planning prerequisites, securing recommendation letters, and deciding whether to take a gap year for more direct-care experience.

UC San Diego can still provide an excellent pre-PA foundation through its rigorous biology and health-related programs and proximity to UC San Diego Health. The main challenge is that UCSD is a much larger public university, so students often need to be more proactive about finding faculty mentorship, navigating enrollment, and locating clinical roles.

PA admissions will care far more about a strong GPA, completion of each program’s prerequisites, substantial direct patient-care experience, thoughtful recommendations, and a convincing reason for pursuing the PA profession than the name of either undergraduate institution. A significantly lower UCSD cost could therefore outweigh Duke’s structural advantages, especially because PA school itself is expensive and competitive. At either school, prioritize sustained paid or volunteer patient-facing work such as EMT, medical assistant, CNA, patient care technician, or similar roles rather than assuming hospital volunteering alone will meet experience expectations.
