Is Northwestern University or RPI harder to get into?

The main practical difference is that Northwestern admits from an applicant pool with far more intense competition across nearly every academic and extracurricular profile, while RPI’s admissions process is more accessible for students with strong preparation in STEM. Both schools expect rigorous coursework and solid academic performance, but Northwestern’s applicant pool includes a much larger share of students with exceptional grades, testing, activities, and recommendations.

Northwestern is a highly selective private research university with broad national and international demand across engineering, journalism, arts and sciences, business-related fields, and more. RPI is also a respected private research institution, particularly known for engineering, computer science, and technology, but it does not have the same overall level of undergraduate admission selectivity as Northwestern.

That does not mean RPI is easy to enter. Competitive RPI applicants typically show strong math and science preparation, especially for engineering or computing, along with evidence that they can handle a demanding technical curriculum. Northwestern, however, is harder to get into on a schoolwide basis because even applicants who appear fully qualified are competing for relatively few places.
