Boston College vs. Williams College: Which Offers Better Faculty Access?

Williams College offers more consistently close faculty access for an undergraduate whose priority is regular academic contact. Its small liberal-arts setting is built around discussion-based classes, close advising, and professors who teach undergraduates rather than delegating much of the instruction to graduate students. Williams also has its tutorial program, in which two students work closely with a professor on a focused topic, producing and discussing independent work in an unusually intensive format.

At Williams, faculty relationships commonly extend beyond office hours into thesis supervision, reading courses, research collaboration, and informal intellectual life on campus. Because the college has a much smaller student body and no large graduate or professional-school population, professors’ teaching and mentoring are central to their roles.

Boston College has many approachable, invested professors and meaningful undergraduate research opportunities, especially for students who proactively attend office hours, join departmental programs, and seek out faculty projects. Its Jesuit emphasis on mentorship can also make advising relationships thoughtful and personal. However, BC is a substantially larger research university, so introductory courses may be larger and faculty availability can vary more by department, professor, and a student’s own initiative.

For the most reliable day-to-day access, Williams has the clearer advantage. Boston College can still provide strong mentoring, but it rewards students who are comfortable taking the lead in finding it.
