Which offers more academic flexibility: Boston College or Amherst College?

Amherst College offers more academic flexibility for a student who wants to range widely across subjects before settling on a direction. Its open curriculum has no required core or distribution sequence, so students can build their course plan around their interests while completing a major and general degree requirements. Amherst students can also take courses through the Five College Consortium, adding options at Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and UMass Amherst.

Amherst is especially well suited to someone drawn to interdisciplinary combinations that may not fit neatly into one department. Students can design an interdisciplinary major when an existing program does not adequately match their academic plan, subject to faculty approval.

Boston College provides meaningful exploration, but within a more structured Jesuit liberal-arts framework. Its Core Curriculum requires coursework across areas such as writing, literature, mathematics, natural science, history, philosophy, theology, social science, and the arts. That structure can be valuable for a student who wants a guided, broad education, but it leaves less elective space than Amherst’s open curriculum, particularly in the first years.
