How does Carnegie Mellon’s campus size compare with Ohio State’s?

Carnegie Mellon will feel far more compact and immediately walkable than Ohio State.

CMU suits a student who likes a close-knit daily routine: walking from a residence hall to class, a lab, the library, and dining often takes only a few minutes. The campus is dense and hilly in places, and its location in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood puts museums, parks, and other universities nearby. Students can still explore the city, but campus itself tends to feel like one connected academic hub.

Ohio State fits someone energized by a much larger environment with distinct areas for academics, housing, athletics, the arts, recreation, and medical facilities. The central academic areas are walkable, and many students spend most days within a manageable portion of campus. But getting from one end of campus to another can take substantially longer, so students commonly use buses, bikes, scooters, or campus transit.

At Ohio State, daily life can feel more varied and anonymous because there are many more places and people circulating at once. At CMU, it is easier to run into classmates repeatedly and develop a strong sense of where everything is quickly. Neither campus requires a car for ordinary undergraduate life, but CMU offers the more concentrated, small-campus feel.
