The biggest practical difference is that USC’s spirit is highly visible and sports-centered, while Rice’s is more intimate and rooted in its residential college community. At USC, major football games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Trojan Marching Band, and rivalry weeks create a campus-wide atmosphere that is hard to miss. Students commonly wear cardinal and gold, follow the Trojans closely, and treat game days as a major part of the social calendar.

Rice has genuine traditions and loyal students, but its spirit does not revolve around high-profile athletics in the same way. The residential college system is the center of student life, so affiliation with one’s college often matters more day to day than support for a varsity team. Events such as Beer Bike, Orientation Week, college intramurals, and college-specific traditions can be extremely spirited, sometimes quirky and competitive, but they feel smaller-scale and more participatory than USC’s large spectator events.

For school spirit in the conventional sense of packed games, prominent traditions, and broad enthusiasm around varsity sports, USC has the stronger culture. Rice may be more appealing if you want spirited traditions that come from a tight residential community rather than a major athletics scene.
