How do the campus settings of MIT and Northwestern compare?

The biggest practical difference is that MIT is embedded in a dense, active Cambridge/Boston setting, while Northwestern’s Evanston campus feels more like a traditional, self-contained residential campus on Lake Michigan. At MIT, academic buildings, labs, restaurants, apartments, and public transit are tightly interwoven; at Northwestern, the lakefront, quads, and residential areas create more physical separation from city life.

MIT sits along the Charles River in Cambridge, across from Boston and near Kendall Square, Central Square, and Harvard Square. Students can walk to cafes, grocery stores, internships, museums, and major Boston destinations, and the MBTA Red Line makes it easy to move through Cambridge and into downtown Boston. The tradeoff is that MIT has relatively little of the enclosed “college bubble” feeling: the campus is compact, urban, and surrounded by traffic, businesses, and city activity.

Northwestern’s main undergraduate campus is in Evanston, a walkable college-oriented suburb with its own restaurants, shops, beaches, and a calmer pace. Its lakefront setting is a defining part of daily life, with open green space and views that MIT’s built-up environment does not offer. Chicago is accessible by CTA and commuter rail, but it is a planned trip rather than something most students step into immediately after class. Northwestern also has a Chicago campus for professional schools, but undergraduates primarily live and study in Evanston.

For a student who wants city access to be immediate and woven into everyday routines, MIT offers the more urban experience. For someone who wants a classic residential campus with lakefront space while retaining access to a major city, Northwestern provides the more balanced setting.
