Georgia Tech vs. Columbia: Which offers stronger computer science opportunities for undergraduates?
I’m a high school senior deciding between Georgia Tech and Columbia for computer science. I’m especially interested in comparing the overall undergraduate opportunities each school provides, such as access to research, internships, and meaningful technical projects, rather than focusing only on rankings.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Georgia Tech’s larger, more engineering-centered computer science ecosystem versus Columbia’s access to New York City and a more interdisciplinary undergraduate experience. Georgia Tech gives CS students broad course pathways through its “Threads” curriculum, extensive project-based options, and a campus culture where computing is central across many majors. Columbia offers strong CS academics and proximity to startups, finance, media, research labs, and technology offices, but its Core Curriculum leaves less elective space than many students expect.

Columbia’s distinctive advantage is location. During the academic year, students can more readily pursue part-time internships, networking events, and project work with organizations in Manhattan and the broader New York area. It can be particularly compelling for someone who wants to combine CS with fields such as entrepreneurship, economics, journalism, public policy, biomedical work, or the arts. Research access exists, but students may need to be more proactive because opportunities can be competitive and the engineering school is smaller.
For the broadest set of undergraduate CS-specific opportunities, especially hands-on projects, technical peer community, and curricular flexibility within computing, Georgia Tech is the stronger choice. Columbia is the better pick when New York-based opportunities and a tightly integrated liberal-arts-plus-engineering education are central to what you want from college.
