Is Harvard Law School or Columbia Law School better for becoming a lawyer?

Harvard Law School has the broader overall reputation and national reach, while Columbia Law School is especially powerful for students targeting New York City and large-firm corporate practice. Either school can lead to exceptional legal opportunities, and neither is a necessary prerequisite to becoming a successful lawyer.

Harvard tends to suit a student who wants maximum flexibility across legal fields and locations. Its unusually large alumni network, wide course selection, clinics, and visibility in public interest law, government, academia, litigation, business, and international work make it a particularly strong platform for someone who has not yet decided on a specialty. Harvard’s name recognition also travels very easily outside major legal markets.

Columbia is an outstanding fit for a student drawn to the intersection of law, finance, business, and policy in New York. Its location gives students direct access to major law firms, courts, corporations, nonprofits, and financial institutions during the school year. Students interested in BigLaw, securities, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, and international commercial work often find Columbia’s New York network especially valuable.

For a high school senior, the more important decision is choosing an undergraduate college where you can earn excellent grades, develop strong writing and analytical skills, and build meaningful experiences. Law schools do not require a particular major or undergraduate “pre-law” track. Later, factors such as cost, scholarships, career goals, clinics, faculty, and where you want to practice should matter more than a small perceived difference in prestige between Harvard and Columbia.
