For a student who specifically wants to live in and feel connected to the South, Vanderbilt is the much closer fit. Its campus sits in Nashville, a Southern city with a strong local identity shaped by music, food, state politics, and regional institutions. Brown is in Providence, Rhode Island, and its setting and student culture are distinctly New England rather than Southern.

At Vanderbilt, the regional difference would show up in everyday life, not just geography. You would have Nashville’s warmer climate, Southern social customs, nearby SEC sports culture, and easy access to other Southern cities and destinations. Vanderbilt draws students nationally and is not culturally uniform, but it remains deeply tied to Nashville and Tennessee through internships, service, healthcare, business, and arts opportunities.

Brown offers an urban campus experience too, but Providence connects you more naturally to Boston, New York, and the broader Northeast corridor. The seasons are colder, and the surrounding political and cultural environment is characteristic of coastal New England. Brown’s open curriculum and highly self-directed academic culture may still outweigh location for some students, but it would not provide a Southern regional experience.
