Brown vs. Columbia for Undergraduate Architecture: Which Is the Better Choice?

For a student who wants the most structured undergraduate architecture preparation, Columbia is the clearer choice. Its New York City setting also makes the built environment, firms, museums, and urban issues unusually immediate parts of the education.

Columbia fits someone who wants architecture to be a central, organized academic path from the start. The program is pre-professional rather than a five-year professional B.Arch., so students planning to become licensed architects would typically continue to a professional M.Arch. afterward.

Brown is compelling for a student who sees architecture as one part of a broader liberal-arts education. Brown’s Open Curriculum gives students considerable freedom to build an individualized path, but that freedom also means less of the prescribed studio sequence and professional architecture infrastructure found at Columbia.

The Brown-RISD Dual Degree Program can be an exceptional alternative for students who want deep studio-art and design training alongside Brown academics. It is a demanding five-year program requiring admission to both institutions, however, and it is not the same as simply majoring in architecture at Brown.
