How do I ask a college for a financial aid appeal?

My financial aid package is a lot lower than what my family can realistically afford, and I am trying to figure out the right way to ask for a review.

I want to understand how students usually write a financial aid appeal and what information colleges expect you to include when you make the request.

You usually ask through the financial aid office, either by email, a school-specific appeal form, or both.

Your appeal should be polite, specific, and brief. State that you are grateful for the offer, that the current package is not affordable for your family, and that you are requesting a reevaluation based on updated or clarifying financial information.

Include the exact reason for the appeal. Colleges expect concrete circumstances such as job loss, reduced income, high unreimbursed medical expenses, divorce or separation, death of a parent, eldercare costs, one-time income showing up on tax returns, or another major change that is not fully reflected on the FAFSA or CSS Profile.

Attach documentation that supports your request. That might include recent pay stubs, a letter about unemployment, medical bills, tax documents, a statement explaining changed circumstances, or copies of other aid offers.

A simple structure works well: identify yourself, say you are appealing the aid package, explain the financial change or gap, list attached documents, and ask whether the office can review your file. Keep the tone respectful and avoid sounding demanding.

A sample opening could be: “I am writing to respectfully request a review of my financial aid award. After reviewing my family’s current financial situation, we believe the calculated contribution does not reflect our present ability to pay because my parent’s income has recently decreased due to job loss.”

If the issue is not a changed circumstance but simply affordability, be honest about the gap and ask if there is any additional need-based aid, merit aid, or institutional grant funding available.
