What does UT Dallas look for in students who receive merit scholarships?

I’m a high school junior looking at UT Dallas because the cost matters a lot for my family, and I’m trying to understand what actually makes someone competitive for merit aid there.

I know grades and test scores matter, but I’m not sure how much things like course rigor, extracurriculars, leadership, or essays really factor into UT Dallas merit scholarship decisions.

At UT Dallas, merit scholarships are driven most heavily by academics, especially your GPA, class rigor, and usually test scores when those are strong.

Extracurriculars, leadership, and essays usually matter more as supporting factors than as the main driver. They can help distinguish students who are already academically strong, but they generally do not make up for weaker grades or lower rigor.
