Should I choose UC Santa Barbara or the University of Oregon for journalism?

For a student specifically committed to journalism, the University of Oregon is the more direct and career-focused choice. Its School of Journalism and Communication offers a dedicated journalism major, while UC Santa Barbara’s closest academic paths are broader programs such as Communication and Film and Media Studies rather than a standalone journalism curriculum.

The practical training structure is a major differentiator. Oregon journalism students can build clips and newsroom experience through student media such as the Daily Emerald, as well as project-based reporting and production opportunities connected to the school.

UC Santa Barbara can still be appealing for someone who wants journalism alongside a broader liberal-arts education or is more interested in communication research, digital culture, film, or media analysis. But that route would require more initiative to assemble journalism-specific training through campus publications, internships, and elective choices.

For preparing to enter reporting, editing, digital news, or multimedia journalism soon after college, Oregon provides the more structured foundation and the easier way to leave with substantive published work.
