Is Harvard or Carnegie Mellon better for studying game design?

I’m a high school senior interested in game design, especially the creative and technical sides of making games. I’m comparing Harvard and Carnegie Mellon and want to understand which school generally provides stronger undergraduate preparation for this field.

The biggest practical difference is that Carnegie Mellon offers a far more structured, hands-on pathway into making games, while Harvard offers a broader liberal-arts education in which you would need to assemble your own game-design path. At CMU, undergraduates can combine computing, art, design, and human-computer interaction through programs such as the Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts and IDeATe’s game design offerings. Its Entertainment Technology Center also gives the university a deep game-development culture, although the ETC itself is primarily graduate-focused.

Harvard can support an interest in games through computer science, visual and environmental studies, storytelling, psychology, design-related coursework, student groups, and independent projects. That flexibility can be valuable for someone who wants games to intersect with another serious academic interest, such as narrative, education, social science, or entrepreneurship. But Harvard does not provide the same clearly defined undergraduate game-design curriculum or built-in interdisciplinary production environment that CMU does.

For the creative side of games, CMU is particularly useful because its culture encourages collaboration among programmers, artists, designers, and researchers. For the technical side, its computer science, robotics, graphics, and human-computer interaction resources are exceptionally relevant. Harvard can be an excellent choice for a self-directed student who wants a broader academic experience and can actively seek out projects, but Carnegie Mellon is the more direct and better-equipped undergraduate preparation for a student specifically focused on game design.
