Harvard vs. Yale for Undergraduate International Relations: Which Has the Stronger Program?

For an undergraduate focused specifically on diplomacy and global security, Yale has the more purpose-built program because of the Jackson School of Global Affairs and its Global Affairs major. Yale’s curriculum is designed around contemporary international problems, combining politics, history, economics, data analysis, and language study rather than treating international relations solely as a subfield of political science.

Harvard offers exceptional international-relations coursework and a larger surrounding ecosystem in policy and public affairs. Students can study IR through the Government concentration and attend programming connected to places such as the Institute of Politics. Those resources can be extraordinarily valuable, but Harvard does not organize the undergraduate experience around a standalone IR major in quite the same way Yale does.

Harvard may be more appealing if you want to pair international relations with a highly customized course of study, such as economics, regional studies, history, or quantitative social science, while drawing on a vast research university. But for a senior already centered on diplomacy and global security, Yale’s Jackson School creates the clearer and more direct undergraduate academic home.
